Bhubaneswar, July 17: Odisha's railway infrastructure received a major boost as Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated seven redeveloped railway stations in the state under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The inauguration formed part of a nationwide programme aimed at upgrading railway stations with improved passenger amenities and modern infrastructure.
The seven stations inaugurated in Odisha are Balangir, Barpali, Baripada, Bimalgarh, Kesinga, Paralakhemundi and Talcher. The redevelopment has focused on making these stations more comfortable, accessible and efficient for passengers while also enhancing their overall appearance.
The upgraded stations now feature improved waiting areas, better lighting, modern toilets, digital information display systems, enhanced platform facilities, lifts and ramps for easier access, wider foot overbridges and better parking arrangements. These improvements are expected to provide a safer and more convenient travel experience for passengers.
A key aspect of the redevelopment is the incorporation of Odisha's cultural identity into the station designs. Elements inspired by the state's traditional art, architecture and local heritage have been included to give each station a distinct regional character while maintaining modern standards.
State leaders welcomed the inauguration, saying the upgraded stations would strengthen rail connectivity, support tourism, encourage trade and improve transportation for local communities. The project is also expected to contribute to regional economic development by improving access to different parts of the state.
The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme is a long-term initiative of Indian Railways to transform railway stations into modern transport hubs with better passenger facilities and sustainable infrastructure. Several stations across Odisha have been selected for redevelopment under the scheme as part of the state's ongoing railway modernisation efforts.
